Result: FC Barcelona 2-0 Getafe
Date: 12 May 2019
Venue: Camp Nou
LaLiga champions FC Barcelona returned to wining ways with a 2-0 victory over Getafe in their penultimate league encounter on Sunday evening.
The Catalans rested a few key figures after a disjointed display in their UEFA Champions League semi-final exit to Liverpool on Tuesday.
Getafe, who are gunning for a top-four spot, received the first opening when Angel Rodriguez’s effort went around the post 12 minutes in following a through ball.
On the half-hour mark, the visitors put forward another scare when Jorge Molina’s curling effort narrowly flew past the post.
Barca found the breakthrough on 39 minutes when Arturo Vidal lashed home from close-range after David Soria failed to hang onto a shot from Gerard Pique.
After a quiet start to the second half, Barca edged close to a second goal on 56 minutes with a chipped attempt from talisman Lionel Messi, but Soria plucked out the danger.
Soria came up trumps again after pulling off a close-range save from Malcom’s point-blank effort off Pique’s pass three minutes later.
The Deep Blues were on the ropes as the entered the latter stages, as a timeous goal-line clearance from Leandro Cabrera four minutes later hooked Messi’s effort off the line.
Getafe nearly snatched an equaliser late in the game as Molina was denied the equaliser after his close-range header cannoned off the bar and back into play.
However, Barca killed off the match for good at the death after Djene Dakonam deflected the ball into his own net after some good work by Messi and Alena into his own net.
