Result: Eibar 0-3 FC Barcelona
Date: 19 October 2019
Venue: Estadio Municipal de Ipurúa
FC Barcelona's new front three of Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Antoine Griezmann all fund the back of the net as the LaLiga champions thrashed Eibar on Saturday.
Barca manager, Ernesto Valverde was forced to make numerous changes after two of his players were sent off in their thumping win over Sevilla, as Jordi Alba returned from injury to start while Samuel Umtiti took the place of the suspended Gerard Pique. Sergio Busquets and Antoine Griezmann were also drafted in the line-up, in place of Arturo Vidal and the suspended Ousmane Dembele.
Blaugrana took the lead in the 13th minute after Griezmann went clear on goal from the long looping pass of Clement Lenglet and cushioned a side-footed shot past the advancing goalkeeper Marko Dmitrovic at his near post.
Valverde's troops were gaining momentum after that and they nearly went 2-0 up on the half-hour mark after Messi dribbled his way past a crowded defence on the edge of the box and seemed to have got past Dmitrovic as well, but the shot-stopper recovered with his arm to take the ball away from the Argentine, who was about to tap in to an empty net.
The visitors had a good attacking spell in the latter phase of the first stanza but they could not find the final pass, while Eibar were unable trouble goalkeper Marc-Andre Ter Stegen, who did not have much to do in the opening 45 minutes.
Barca were patient on their attacks in the second stanza, before they were eventually rewarded with a second goal two minutes before the hour-mark courtesy of Messi, who scored with a low shot after being teed up by Griezmann on the left side of the box.
Eibar were leaving a big space behind while going forward, desperately trying to get back to the game and they were punished in the 66th minute after Griezmann dinked a looping through ball to Messi, who unselfishly teed up Suarez to score into an empty net.
Valverde needed fresh legs and more attacking impetus in midfield with 11 minutes remaining, as Ivan Rakitic was brought on in place of Frenkie De Jong but there were no more goals in the end, despite Barca threatening late in the game.
Nevertheless, the victory sees the defending champions move top of the table, one point clear of Real Madrid who are on action on Saturday night.
