Result: Atletico Madrid 1-0 FC Barcelona
Date: 21 November 2020
Venue: Wanda Metropolitano Stadium
FC Barcelona's struggles in LaLiga continued after suffering defeat to Atletico Madrid, who were without Luis Suarez on Saturday night.
Suarez could not face his former side after he tested positive for Covid-19 and he was replaced by Angel Correa in the line-up while Lionel Messi returned to the line-up for Barca, with Miralem Pjanic replacing the injured Sergio Busquets.
The visitors were on the front foot in the early stages, looking to penetrate Atletico's defence but they were not finding the gaps.
Diego Simeone's troops were growing in the game midway into the first stanza but they too were not carving out clear openings.
Messi came close to breaking the deadlock for Blaugrana just before the break after bursting his way inside the box to face goalkeeper Jan Oblak but his low shot was saved by the Slovenian in a one-on-one situation.
However, Atletico finally snatched the lead in first-half stoppage time after Yannick Carrasco went through on goal one-one-one with goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen, nutmegged him and slotted the ball into an empty net from outside the box.
Ronald Koeman's men were fired up coming from the break and Clement Lenglet came close to equalising just before the hour-mark with a close-range header from Messi's cross but Oblak made a great save.
The game was geting tight after that, with Simeone's charges keeping their shape at the back and not giving away spaces behind the defence.
Antoine Griezmann came close to levelling matters for Barca in the last eight minutes with an angled header that was goal-bound but the Slovenian shot-stopper pulled off another amazing save.
Sergi Roberto came very close for Barca to salvage at least a point in the dying minutes after his strike from the edge of the box took a nasty deflection that wrong-footed Oblak but his effort missed the far corner agonisingly wide and Atletico held on to go up to second on the log, behind leaders Real Sociedad only by goals-scored ratio.
