Mourinho was considered by many to be the favourite to take over from Santiago Solari, with the Daily Telegraph even suggesting the Portuguese was "almost 100%" certain to be the next Los Blancos boss.
It is also believed that, although Mourinho never spoke directly with club president Florentino Perez about the job, talks took place via intermediaries.
The Portuguese was understood to be keen on returning to his former club, and even had a transfer wish list of four players he wanted to sign for Real, according to El Chiringuito.
It has been claimed that Mourinho wanted to take four Premier League superstars with him to Madrid, namely: David de Gea, Virgil van Dijk, Harry Kane and Christian Eriksen.
However, in the end, it was Zidane – not Mourinho – who returned for a second spell at the club.
The Frenchman was announced as the new Los Blancos boss on Monday, and will now be in charge of the squad revamp, with many big names such as Kylian Mbappe and Eden Hazard being linked with a transfer to Real.
Zidane's first game in charge in his second spell will be a home clash against Celta Vigo on Saturday, and the Spanish giants will be looking to end a run of four successive defeats at the Santiago Bernabeu.
