A France international, who played a big role in their 2018 FIFA World Cup-winning campaign, has explained why he rejected a move to Real Madrid at the beginning of the season.
It is believed that Los Blancos made their interest in Atletico Madrid and France defender Lucas Hernandez known while he was in Russia representing his country.
The centre-back, who plays at fullback for Les Bleus, has now admitted Real were in for his signature in the latest transfer window, but insisted he cannot join the Spanish giants due to his love for Atletico.
"I didn't listen too much because I was 100% focused on my club and renewed my deal recently," Hernandez told RMC.
"My agent told me a bit but I told him not to do that.
"Atletico is my club, the team that gave me everything. I'm an honest person and I cannot go to Madrid.
"I want to stay here a long time."
Interestingly, Hernandez's brother, Theo, plays for Real, but is currently on loan at Real Sociedad.
