Although Lionel Messi has been included in FC Barcelona's squad to face Real Madrid in the first leg of their Copa del Rey semi-final on Wednesday night, the injured Argentine superstar will have to "wait until the last moment" before knowing if he is fit enough to play.
The five-time Ballon d'Or winner sustained a knock to his thigh in the LaLiga table-toppers' 2-2 draw with Valencia over the weekend, but resumed training on Tuesday, a day before the clash against his club's biggest rivals.
With growing concern around Messi's fitness, seemingly due to Barca's inability to do the business without their all-time top goalscorer, Barca coach Ernesto Valverde has revealed that the Catalan giants are still set to make a decision on whether or not to field him in the cup fixture against Real.
"It is true that sometimes we have had doubts with players and we have waited until the last moment," Valverde was quoted as saying by BBC Football.
"It's the same with Messi."
Messi became the first player in Europe's top five leagues to reach the 20-goal mark this season when he scored his brace against Valencia.
Overall, he has scored 29 goals in 27 appearances across all competitions for the Blaugrana in 2018/19 so far.
