The Catalan club reached an agreement with Gremio for Arthur Melo's signature late last year, but announced at the time that he would only join up with the squad in January 2019.
However, following the exits of Paulinho and club legend Andres Iniesta, the Blaugrana struck a deal with Gremio for the young midfielder to arrive earlier.
Arthur was unveiled at his new club on Thursday, after undergoing a medical and officially signing his contract with the Catalans, which will run until 2024.
Despite not yet winning a cap for his national team, the player impressed enough with his former club to be named in Brazil's senior squad for two 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifiers in 2017.
The Brazilian joins Barca after making 50 appearances for Gremio, for whom he scored two goals and assisted a further three strikes.
