Following the sacking of Ernesto Valverde, Spanish giants FC Barcelona are said to be closing in on the signing of a Brazilian star who could be set to join the Catalan giants this month.
According to Mundo Deportivo, 21-year-old Palmeiras midfielder Matheus Fernandes could sign for the Blaugrana in this transfer window.
Many publications in Brazil have reported that the youngster will join the club for a fee of about €7 million (R112 million), although add-ons could take the total fee to €11 million (R176 million).
Fernandes made his senior debut in his country of birth for Botafogo in 2017, and after 76 appearances for the club, moved to Palmeiras in January 2019.
The Brazilian starlet is believed to be best deployed in a holding midfield role, but also has the ability play further forward, providing versatility to whichever team he represents.
Barcelona do currently have a lot of options in midfield, though it has been claimed Ivan Rakitic is likely to be phased out of the side from now until the end of the season by new manager Quique Setien.
The 61-year-old took over from Valverde in the early hours of Tuesday morning, after a string of poor results.
Fernandes could become the club's first signing of the January transfer window, having played just 11 matches for Palmeiras.
