Atletico Madrid striker Diego Costa has been hit with an eight-match ban after hurling insults at the referee during his side's 2-0 LaLiga defeat to FC Barcelona last weekend.
The former Chelsea star received a straight red card in the 28th minute of the match on Saturday after verbally abusing the referee in charge, Jesus Gil Manzano.
Manzano has since revealed what Costa had told him.
"I s*** on your wh*** mother, I s*** on your wh*** mother," the referee was quoted as saying by the Daily Mirror when asked what Costa had said to him.
Despite Barcelona defender Gerard Pique attempting to restrain the visibly angry Costa as he left the field, the damage had already been done and, as a result, the 30-year-old, who is expected to appeal the decision later this week, has been slapped with an eight-match ban – four games for insulting the referee and four games for manhandling the man in the middle.
The Spain striker is now likely to see miss the remainder of the season as Simeone's men challenge for second-place on the league table with Real Madrid.
The Rojiblancos themselves were handed a £2 400 (R44 000) fine for the incident, while Costa was fined £5 178 (R94 800).
The Spain international has made 21 appearances across all competitions for Atletico so far this season, finding the back of the net on five occasions and registering three assists.
