Veteran full-back Dani Alves claims Real Madrid were lucky that FC Barcelona were only able to find form late in the season.
Barcelona's revival began with the appointment of Xavi Hernandez late last year, which has seen the side jump to second spot but they sit 15 points behind Los Blancos.
The Catalan giants also secured an emphatic 4-0 win over Los Blancos at the Santiago Bernabeu during their 15-game unbeaten run, which was ended on Monday night.
The Brazilian full-back claims the title race could have been different if Blaugrana hadn't found their form so late in the campaign.
"[Real Madrid] are lucky that we woke up so late that we couldn't fight for the title," Alves said to Barca TV.
"Now we have to think about another objective.”
The Catalan giants will now turn their attention to Sunday's LaLiga encounter against Rayo Vallecano at the Camp Nou.
