Spanish Copa del Rey
Result: Sevilla 3-1 Atlético Madrid (5-2 agg.)

Atlético Madrid were dumped out of the Copa del Rey at the quarter-final stage after a 5-2 aggregate defeat to Sevilla, sealed by a 3-1 loss in Tuesday night’s fixture at the Pizjuan.
Sevilla opened the scoring within 30 seconds, sending the home fans wild. Pablo Sarabia’s cross found Sergio Escudero, whose fine strike extended the aggregate lead.
However, Atlético were handed a lifeline in the 13th minute, when Antoine Griezmann scored a long-range stunner to equalise on the night.
Griezmann could have levelled the aggregate scoreline 11 minutes later, but fired off target from close range after meeting a ball in from Sime Vrsaljko on the right.
Franco Vázquez missed an even better chance at the other end 37 minutes in, heading wide of the target from right in front of goal after meeting a Jesús Navas cross.
However, Sevilla reclaimed their lead on the night in the 48th minute from the penalty spot. Saúl Niguez was the guilty party after a clumsy tackle on Joaquín Correa and Éver Banega took full advantage, slotting home a perfectly-placed strike.
Ángel Correa should have pulled back a goal 52 minutes in, but a fantastic Sergio Rico save from point-blank range denied him.
Diego Simeone cut a frustrated figure on the touchline as his side toiled away to no avail. He made all three of his substitutions early in the second half, but still, Sevilla remained in control.
The tie was sealed by a breakaway goal in the 79th minute. Sarabia’s shot at the end of the move deflected in off Diego Godín, crushing Atlético’s already slim comeback hopes.
There are still plenty of obstacles in Sevilla’s way in the Copa del Rey, but having knocked one of Spain’s best teams out of the tournament, perhaps the perennial Europa League overachievers might just begin to dream of cup glory.
