Date: 24 January 2018
Venue: Santiago Bernabeu
Real Madrid were dumped out of the Copa Del Rey after they lost 2-1 to Leganes in the second leg of their quarterfinal tie.
Zinedine Zidane rested a few of their big names, with Cristiano Ronaldo, Gareth Bale, Casemiro and Marcelo all missing out.
Marco Asensio, who got the winner in the first-leg a week ago was the first on goal, but the ball tangled between his feet in the opening two minutes of a packed Bernabeu.
Leganes, on the other hand, made their intentions clear as they threatened to take the lead with a free-kick six minutes later through Claudio Beauvue, but he struck the post.
They threatened again shortly before the half and hour mark, but this time Nordin Amrabat’s header was comfortably dealt with by Kiko Casilla.
At the other end, Real got a free-kick on the edge of the box, but Isco blazed it over the bar 12-yards from goal.
The Legionaries found the opener with a stunning 30-metre strike after Javier Eraso intercepted Nacho Monreal on the edge of the box after 31 minutes.
At this stage, the tie was level and the prerogative of both sides to take the game by the scruff of its neck.
Benzema came close to head Los Blancos back in front, but he failed to get his head on Lucas Vazquez cross for what would have been a well-executed diving header 10 minutes before the break.
Beauvue threatened once again, this time with an acrobatic overheard came which hit the side-netting on the stroke of half time.
Benzema delicately put the tie back in Real’s favour with a chip from an onrushing Nereo Champagne following Vazquez’s through ball a minute after the break.
However, their joy was short-lived after Gabriel Pires rose highest to head the visitors back in front and in control of the tie from a corner kick eight minutes later.
With the brink of elimination looming large, Zinedine Zidane rolled out some of his big guns, with Luka Modric entering the fray.
Champagne denied Benzema his brace 10 minutes from time, with a point-blank save, while minutes later substitute Marcos Llorente saw his header sailing wide.
Ramos was the latest to bring the best out of Champagne with a looping header, which the Argentine-born acrobatically punched over the bar four minutes from time.
At the other end, Eraso spotted Casilla of his line and tried the audacious lob, but he failed to succeed two minutes later as Asier Garitano’s men pulled off a major upset.
