Spanish Copa del Rey
Result: Leganés 0-1 Real Madrid
Venue: Estadio Municipal de Butarque
Date: 18 January 2018
Marco Asensio’s late winner gave Real Madrid a 1-0 win over Leganés at the Butarque in Thursday’s first leg of their Copa del Rey quarter-final.
Unsurprisingly, Los Blancos dominated the early possession. However, they struggled to breach the resolute home defence.
In the 34th minute, Mateo Kovacic was presented with a glorious opportunity when he dispossessed Rubén Peréz just outside Leganés’ box. The Croatian let them off the hook, firing well wide of the near post with only the keeper to beat. Had he rolled the ball across the face of goal, he could have set Borja Mayoral up for a tap-in.
At the other end, Kiko Casilla was forced into action just before the hour mark. He did well to block José Naranjo’s dangerous ball across the face of goal.
However, the keeper was nearly made to pick the ball out of the net by his own team-mate 66 minutes in. A delivery from a Leganés free-kick came off the head of Marcos Llorente and rattled the crossbar.
Eight minutes later, a sweetly-struck volley from Claudio Beauvue was kept out at the near post by a fine Casilla save. Real were still occasionally threatening at the other end, but all of a sudden, their opponents seemed the more clinical of the two sides.
However, it was the visitors who finally broke the deadlock in the 89th minute. Theo Hernández’s cross in from the left picked out Asensio, who drilled in the winner from close range and saved Zinedine Zidane’s skin on what was an otherwise gloomy night for the European champions.
