FC Barcelona coach Ernesto Valverde revealed Lionel Messi was playing with an injury during his second-half cameo against Sevillla.
The Argentine started on the bench but came on and rescued a point with a late equaliser in the second half.
Messi missed Argentina's two friendly internationals over the FIFA break with a hamstring strain, but Valverde says he always planned on bringing on the club's all-time top scorer.
"I had planned to bring on Messi anyway," Valverde told Movistar.
"He's injured but he's been inactive for a while and we thought it would be better for him to play to get some rhythm of competition.
"He was decisive. We think he'll be okay for Roma [on Wednesday]."
