Zidane's first spell as Real manager was one dreams are made of. The Frenchman won nine trophies in just two years and a half years at the club, among them three consecutive UEFA Champions League titles and a LaLiga trophy.
Just as when Pep Guardiola was successful at FC Barcelona, many looked to discredit Zidane's impressive managerial showing by claiming he had inherited a great side, but so did many other bosses who have worked at Real but ultimately proved to be failures.
Rafael Benitez was the manager Zidane took over from, but he lasted just 25 matches at the helm. After struggling to get the team playing at their best, the Spaniard was fired in January 2016. The Frenchman then went on to win the Champions League that season with the same group of players.
Following Zidane's successful first spell at the Santiago Bernabeu, former Spain manager Julen Lopetegui was targeted and snapped up by president Florentino Perez. The 52-year-old spent just 14 matches in charge of the team, however, losing six games in the process.
Ex-Manchester City boss Manuel Pellegrini is another high-profile coach who failed to make the grade at Real, where he lasted just a single season in 2009/10. The Chilean failed to win a trophy, which is grounds for a sacking at the Spanish giants.
Despite winning a Spanish Super Cup, Carlos Queiroz, who once coached the South African national team, was also considered to be a flop. The Portuguese lost 14 times and drew a further 11 matches in his 59 games in charge, and was then replaced by Jose Antonio Camacho, who himself lasted just six matches.
