An FC Barcelona misfit has admitted he is regretting his decision to stay with the Blaugrana this season.
Belgium international Thomas Vermaelen, who joined the Spanish side from Arsenal in 2014, has had a torrid time in Spain since, making only 22 appearances for the club in his three seasons at the club.
The 32-year-old, who is currently in camp with the Belgian national team, has revealed that he stayed at the Camp Nou in order to fight for his place in the team but now seemingly regrets his decision.
"In the summer, I thought that it would be good to stay at Barcelona, but now, having seen what my situation is like, I can see it is not the case," he told Het Laatste Nieuws.
"I am happy to play for Belgium given that, for my club, I hardly play."
The former Arsenal captain declined to say anything more on the matter as he was not happy with how his words from a previous interview touching on the same subject were twisted.
"I am not going to say anything more because the last time, I spoke my comments were taken out of context," he added.
The centre back played a full 90 minutes for his national team in their 3-3 draw with Mexico last Friday
