Spanish La Liga
Result: Villarreal 0-2 FC Barcelona
Date: 10 December 2017
Venue: Estadio de la Ceramica
FC Barcelona moved five points clear at the top of La Liga after goals from Luis Suarez and Lionel Messi secured a 2-0 win over Villarreal at the Estadio de la Ceramica.
It was surprisingly an even contested affair in the opening 15 minutes with both sides seeing a bit of the ball.
In the 16th minute, Villarreal went close to breaking the deadlock but Marc-Andre Ter Stegen produced a fine save to keep out Roberto Soriano's volley from six-yards out.
Messi went agonisingly close to handing Barca the lead on 21 minutes when his curling free-kick crashed against the upright.
The Catalan giants took control of the encounter for the final 20 minutes of the half, but they were unable to carve out another clear-cut opening.
The score remained goalless at the halftime break.
With Barca struggling to break down Villarreal, Ernesto Valverde introduced Paco Alcacer fro Denis Suarez on 58 minutes.
Two minutes later, the hosts were reduced to 10 men when Dani Raba was shown a straight red card for studs up challenge on Sergio Busquets.
Barca eventually broke the deadlock in the 71st minute as Luis Suarez played a neat one-two with Alcacer before rounding Sergio Asenjo to slot into an empty net.
The visitors sealed the win in the 82nd minute as Messi collected a pass from Busquets, skipped past two players before calmly slotting past Asenjo.
