Leo Baptistao scored the only of the game to hand Villarreal a 1-0 win over Atletico Madrid at the Estadio El Madrigal on Saturday night.
After a quiet opening, the Yellow Submarines broke the deadlock in the 14th minute when Leo Baptistao calmly slotted past Jan Oblak from close range, after being played in by Roberto Saldado.
The visitors tried to hit back straight away but Jackson Martinez's long range effort produced a comfortable save from Areola.
Oblak was called into action three minutes later, as the Atletico goalkeeper pulled off a fine save to deny Soldado from a tight angle.
Villarreal nearly added to their lead in the 39th minute through Samu Castillejo but the striker's header sailed inches wide of the upright.
Atletico manager, Diego Simone, made two attacking changes at the start of the half, as brought on Fernando Torres and Luciano Vietto to bolster the strike force.
Despite making the attacking changes, Atletico struggled to create openings in the, even when they most of the possession.
The tempo of the encounter proved to be a stop-start affair due the amount of stoppages, while there were also few altercations.
Areola had to be at his best in the 88th minute, as the Villarreal shot-stopper reacted well to keep out Angel Correa's snapshot from inside the area.
However, the visitors could not find the important equaliser, as Villarreal held on for the win and moved to the top of the La Liga standings.
