Spanish La Liga

Result: Valencia 0-0 Atletico Madrid

Date: 09 September 2017

Venue: Mestalla

Atletico Madrid's stuttering start to the season continued after they played out 0-0 draw with Valencia at the Mestalla.

Diego Someone's charges started on the front foot, with Angel Correa coming close to opening the scoring in the fourth minute of the match.

However, Valencia settled as the game got momentum around the 12th minute with Andreas Pereira a linch-pin in midfield, repelling the attacks from the visitors.

Pereira hit a long range shot from 25-yards that was goal-bound, but his shot missed slightly over the bar.

The match was swinging to and fro in midfield, with both sides restricting each other to long range shots around the half-hour mark.

Jose Gaya made a fantastic cross for Rodrigo Moreno in the 38th minute but the latter's header went slightly over the bar.

Luciano Vietto had a similar opportunity five minutes before half-time - on the other end of the pitch for the Red and Whites - but his header missed narrowly wide.

The match went into the interval with both sides logged at 0-0.

Yannick Carrasco nearly broke the deadlock a minute into the second-half with a left-footed shot from just outside the box but goalkeeper Neto produced a wonderful save to keep the score goalless.

Neto denied Correa the glory in the hour-mark, saving a goal-bound shot from inside the box following a counter-attack from Simeone's charges.

In the 71st minute Simeone introduced Kevin Gameiro into the match replacing Angel Correa as the the coach was looking for fresh legs in the middle of the park.

Marcelino Toral also made alterations in his team two minutes later, but it was a forced substitution as Jeison Murillo replaced the injured Ezequiel Garay.

The Oranges had the momentum going into the final ten minutes of the encounter with Atletico looking to hit on the counter-attack.

Nicolas Gaitan had an opportunity in the 86th minute for the Red and Whites to finally break the deadlock but his shot from just outside the box missed slightly over the bar following possession-turn over.

Ultimately the two sides had to settle for the share of the spoils.
