Isco netted a brace to help La Liga champions Real Madrid record a 2-0 win over Espanyol at the Santiago Bernabeu on Sunday evening.
With Dani Carvajal ruled out through a heart condition, Zinedine Zidane handed a start to Moroccan defender Achraf Hakimi.
The hosts had a chance to break the deadlock inside the opening minute, but Pau Lopez produced a good save to deny Isco in the box.
Despite seeing most of the ball in the opening 25 minutes, Real struggled to carve out clear-cut openings and were restricted to strikes from distance.
Los Blancos eventually broke the deadlock in the 30 minute as Isco collected a pass from Ronaldo before slotting under Lopez.
Espanyol were on the back foot for most of the half, but they nearly leveled matters before the break when Gerard Moreno rattled the post.
Keylor Navas came to Real's rescue after 51 minutes as he produced a fine save to deny Navarro from equalising.
Toni Kroos went close to doubling the home side's lead after 66 minutes, but the midfielder's strike sailed just wide of the upright.
Los Blancos eventually doubled their lead on 71 minutes as Isco bagged his second with a superb finish to find the bottom corner.
With Real comfortably leading, Ziden withdrew Luka Modric and introduced Dani Ceballos for the remaining seven minutes of the half.
2-0 was how the score remain at the full-time whistle, as Real move up to fifth spot in the table.
