Spanish La Liga
Result: Real Madrid 1-1 Villarreal
Date: 01 March 2015
Venue: Santiago Bernabeu
Real Madrid wasted a host of chances, as they drew 1-1 with Villarreal at the Santiago Bernabeu on Sunday night.
The visitors nearly stunned the Bernabeu in the 12th minute, Iker Casillas had to be at his best to keep out Gerard Moreno from 12-yards out, before Dani Carvajal headed Moises Gomez's goal-bound effort off the line.
Madrid's first opening arrived in the 35th minute, as Toni Kroos picked out Gareth Bale, who headed just wide of the upright.
Bale was Madrid's biggest threat in the first half and he nearly put them ahead just before the halftime break, as his cross-cum-shot struck the crossbar.
The home side eventually broke the deadlock five minutes after the halftime break, Ronaldo was brought down by Eric Bailly in the box and the Portuguese stepped up and sent Sergio Asenjo the wrong way.
Villarreal got themselves back in the game in the 64th minute, as the impressive Moreno fired home a low effort from the edge of the area.
Asenjo and Ronaldo had a personal duel of their own but it was the Villarreal shot-stopper who came out on top in the 71st minute, tipping the Portuguese's header over the crossbar.
Substitute Jese Rodriguez squandered an opportunity to clinch the three points for Madrid in the 84th minute but the winger placed his effort wide of the mark with the goal at his mercy.
Ronaldo should have won it for the home side in stoppage time but he failed steer his header on target from six-yards out, as the Yellow Submarines left the Santiago Bernabeu with a deserved point.
