Five-Star Atletico Thrash Levante

Spanish La Liga

Result: Levante 0-5 Atlético Madrid

Date: 25 November 2017

Venue: Estadio Ciutat de Valencia

Atlético Madrid thrashed Levante 5-0 in a Saturday night La Liga clash at the Ciutat de Valencia as Kevin Gameiro and Antoine Griezmann starred with a brace apiece.

Diego Simeone’s side took the lead in fortuitous fashion in the fifth minute as Róber Pier diverted Gameiro’s cross from the right into his own net.

Levante wasted a chance to equalise in the 18th minute as Jason fired wide from just inside the box.

At the other end, Gameiro continued to cause nightmares for the home defence and was played through on goal by Griezmann three minutes later. However, Oier Olazábal kept his shot out.

Another defensive error gifted Gameiro a goal in the 29th minute. Ángel Correa had taken the ball around Oier and shot. Although Chema got back in time to prevent it from crossing the line, he lost his footing and stopped it in front of his goal instead of clearing it, leaving the Frenchman with a tap-in.

Enes Ünal went close to equalising four minutes later from a header as he met Toño’s ball in, but he steered it wide of the target.

However, Atlético continued to dominate and Gameiro scored his second goal in the 59th minute. Griezmann picked him out with a delightful pass and he slotted home, all but sealing the three points.

Gameiro turned provider six minutes later as his ball across the face of goal set Griezmann up for the simplest of finishes.

It only took three minutes for Griezmann to score his second goal off the rebound from Gameiro’s strike, which Oier parried into his path.

He had a chance to secure his hat-trick shortly afterwards, but instead passed to Fernando Torres, who fired wide.

Torres then forced a save from Oier in the 79th minute after having been set up by Griezmann again.

Nano had a chance to pull a goal back for Levante, but fired just wide of the far post in the 87th minute with Jan Oblak beaten.

Atlético failed to add to their tally again, but they moved above fierce rivals Real Madrid and kept themselves in the title race ahead of Sunday’s top of the table clash between Valencia and Barcelona.
