MSN On Target As Barca Cement Top Spot

Spanish La Liga

Result: FC Barcelona 4-1 Villarreal

Date: 06 May 2017

Venue: Camp Nou

Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Neymar were all on target to lead FC Barcelona to a 4-1 win over Villarreal at the Camp Nou on Saturday evening.

The Catalan giants dominated the possession in the opening 15 minutes of the first half but were unable to carve out chances.

Barca did break the deadlock with their first chance of the half in the 21st minute as Messi picked out Neymar, who controlled well and slotted into the bottom corner from six-yards out.

Villarreal did not sit back and they leveled matters in the 32nd minute as Cedric Bakambu shrugged off Gerard Pique before smashing past Marc Andre Ter Stegen, 1-1.

However, the home side restored their lead on the stroke of halftime through Messi, who skipped past two players before slotting past Andres, 2-1.

Barca continued to push for more goals in the second half and went close to grabbing a third in the 58th minute but Andres produced a good save to deny Messi from close range.

The hosts eventually got a third goal in the 69th minute when Sergi Roberto played in Suarez, who slotted home from close range with a neat finish, 3-1.

With the hosts comfortably leading, Luis Enrique introduced Javier Mascherano and and Jordi Alba for the final 15 minutes.

Barca were then awarded a penalty in the 82nd minute when when Jaume Costa was adjudged to have handled in the box. Messi stepped up and converted the spot-kick, 4-1.

Enrique's charges managed to see out the final stages with relative ease, as they will remain in top spot for another week.
