Messi & Suarez Score As Barca Drop Points Again

Spanish La Liga

Result: FC Barcelona 2-2 Celta Vigo

Date: 02 December 2017

Venue: Camp Nou

Lionel Messi continued his fine goalscoring form, but FC Barcelona could only manage a 2-2 draw with Celta Vigo at the Camp Nou.

Barcelona unsurprisingly had the better of the opening stages, but were unable to capitalise on their early dominance. In the 20th minute, a dreadful piece of defending made the hosts pay.

The Blaugrana allowed Iago Aspas to run through unchecked and The former Liverpool man played the ball across goal for Maxi Gómez, whose effort was kept out by Marc-André ter Stegen. However, the keeper could do nothing about the follow-up from Aspas, who opened the scoring.

Ernesto Valverde's side hit straight back, with Messi slotting home the equaliser two minutes later after receiving a pass from Paulinho to finish off a lovely team move.

Luis Suárez put the ball in the back of the net three minutes later, but his goal was disallowed for offside. Replays suggested the Uruguayan was level with the last man as Messi threaded a pass through for him.

Messi then clattered the near post in the 31st minute with a shot that had Rubén Blanco beaten.

Barcelona's dominance continued into the early stages of the second half. In the 48th minute, Paulinho surged through and took the ball around the keeper, but fired wide of the near post.

Just as they looked to be taking their foot off the pedal, the hosts hit Celta with another tremendous team move. Jordi Alba teed Suárez up and the Uruguayan put Barcelona in front in the 62nd minute.

Two minutes later, Rubén Blanco was forced to make a fine save to deny Messi a second goal from a header.

In the 70th minute, Celta equalised again against the run of play. Aspas found his way in behind the defence and pulled back for Gómez, who finished off this time.

Barcelona did not take that lying down and went inches away from reclaiming the lead five minutes later. After a cleverly-worked free-kick, Messi passed the ball to Piqué, who shaved the outside of the post.

In the 85th minute, a deflected Denis Suárez shot fell to the diminutive Argentine, but he missed the target from close range. Celta then hit Barcelona on the counter and ter Stegen had to make a fine save to deny Pione Cisto.

The full-time whistle saw Barcelona's 18-match winning run at home in La Liga. After two straight draws for the Catalans, the title race has been blown wide open.
