Result: Espanyol 1-0 Atletico Madrid
Date: 22 December 2017
Venue: RCDE Stadium
Atletico Madrid suffered their first La Liga defeat this season after going down 1-0 to Espanyol on Friday night.
Los Rojiblancos carved out the first chance after just six minutes as Antoine Griezmann teed up Thomas Partey, who fired just wide of the upright from close range.
The home side had to wait until the 19th minute for their first chance of the game as Baptistao sent a lob horribly wide with only Jan Oblak to beat inside the box.
Griezmann scored three goals in his last four appearance against Espanyol but he was finding it tough to bypass the home side's defence.
Unfortunately, that proved to be the trend for the rest of the half as Diego Simeone's charges failed create another goalscoring opportunity.
The second half started in similar fashion to the first, with the first chance only arriving in the 58th minute through Sergio Garcia's low strike.
With Atletico struggling to create scoring chances, Simeone introduced Kevin Gameiro for Fernando Torres with 20 minutes remaining as they pushed for a winning goal.
The change nearly paid off in the 76th minute when Gameiro broke into the box, but the Frenchman could only fire straight at Diego Lopez.
With two minutes remaining, Espanyol broke the deadlock courtesy of a strike from Garica with Esteban Granero picking up the assist.
The home side managed to see off a late surge from Atletico to secure a vital victory on home soil.
