Result: Celta Vigo 0-4 Atletico Madrid
Date: 10 September 2016
Venue: Balaidos
A second-half onslaught from Atletico Madrid sealed an entertaining 4-0 victory after a tightly contested clash against Celta Vigo on Saturday afternoon.
The hosts had a rather promising start to the clash, pushing forward in the opening few minutes and in fact almost went ahead in the 9th minute after Sene’s effort was pushed only inches wide of the target.
Atletico did start to slowly get more comfortable on the ball as they settled in, and Antoine Griezmann forced Sergio Alvarez into a good save in the 18th minute.
The visitors were looking more and more threatening on the ball, but Theo Bongoda was the one who almost snatched the opener as the Celta Vigo man dragged his 32nd minute shot just wide of the mark.
The home side continued to push for the opener and looked the likelier side to go ahead in the closing stages of the first stanza, but Atletico hung on, which saw the teams head into the half-time break deadlocked at 0-0.
Diego Simeone’s charges came out a different outfit after the break, and Koke grabbed the all-important opener in the 52nd minute with a well taken strike following a Griezmann cross.
The visiting side continued to look the more threatening outfit, and Kevin Gameiro came close in the 70th minute, just missing the upright with his effort. Two minutes later, Griezmann did smash the net with a sweet header following a Saul Niguez cross to make it 2-0.
Atleti were looking a class above their opponents in the second stanza, and less than ten minutes later, Griezmann was back with another headed effort, extending their lead to 3-0 with ten minutes to play.
Celta Vigo then upped the tempo, and created a couple of half-chances in the closing stages of the encounter, but it was the visitors who had the last say, as Angel Correa sealed the 4-0 victory with an 88th minute strike.
