Villarreal Silence Atletico At The Calderon

Spanish La Liga

Result: Atletico Madrid 0-1 Villarreal

Date: 25 April 2017

Venue: Vicente Calderon

Atletico Madrid were left stunned at the Vicente Calderon, as they suffered a 1-0 loss to Villarreal in a La Liga clash on Tuesday evening.

Andres Fernandez came to Villarreal's rescue after 12 minutes as he produced a good save to keep out Antoine Griezmann's header.

Atletico went close once again in the 26th minute when Saul Niguez tried his luck from 30-yards out, but his effort sailed inches wide of the upright.

It was one way traffic in the first half and the hosts went close after 35 minutes when Nicolas Gaitan's header was tipped wide of the upright by Fernandez.

Villarreal, meanwhile, found it tough to break down Atletico's defence but the score remained goalless as the sides entered the break.

Fernandez was proving to be the difference on the night, as he produced another fine save in the 54th minute to deny Gaitan in a one-on-one situation.

The Yellow Submarine opted for a change in the 64th minute, as Adrian Lopez made way for Roberto Soriano as they pushed for a winning goal.

Diego Simeone opted for a change of his own after 72 minutes with Fernando Torres replacing the in-effective Yannick Carrassco.

However, it was Villarreal who broke the deadlock in the 82nd minute as Cedric Bakambu charged into the box, before picking out Soriano, who bundled the home, 0-1.

Atletico pushed for an equalising goal in the closing stages, but were unable to bypass the Villarreal defence.
