Luis Fires In-Form Atletico Up To Third

Spanish La Liga

Result: Atletico Madrid 1-0 Real Sociedad

Date: 04 April 2017

Venue: Vicente Calderon

Atletico Madrid moved up to third spot in La Liga after claiming a 1-0 win over Real Sociedad at the Vicente Calderon.

Sociedad made their intentions clear early on as they were sitting compact, while using the pace of Carlos Vela and Willian Jose to catch Atletico on the break.

Antoine Griezmann had Atletico's first opening on 19 minute after combining well with Juanfran, but his curling effort missed narrowly to the right side of the posts.

Atletico eventually broke the deadlock in the 28th minute, as Filipe Luis played a one-two with Fernando Torres, before slotting into the bottom corner, 1-0.

Sociedad were forced into a substitution just before the halftime break, as Alvaro Arzallus was replaced by Artitz Elustondo due to injury.

The match went into the half-time break with Atletico ahead by one goal.

The visitors had upped their tempo and abandoned their counter-attacking game as they were now attacking in numbers.

However, Sociedad were finding it hard to break down a resolute Atletico defence, who looked like giving nothing away.

Angel Correa missed a great opportunity to double the lead in the 81st minute,  when he was left one-on-one with the goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli, but he managed to placed his effort wide.

Nonetheless, Diego Simeone's charges managed to hold out until the final whistle to claim their fifth straight league win.

Other result:

Real Betis 0-1 Villarreal
