An Antoine Griezmann brace was enough to earn Atletico Madrid a 2-0 victory over Getafe in a Spanish La Liga clash at the Vicente Calderon.
Antoine Griezmann was off the mark as early as the 3rd minute when he slotted the ball coolly into the back of the net to give the hosts a 1-0 lead. Atleti continued to look threatening in the opening exchanges but foud it a bit difficult to break the Getafe defensive line.
Yannick Ferreira-Carrasco had a good opportunity in the 18th minute, but the Belgian dragged his effort just wide. Angel Lafita had Getafe’s first real chance at goal in the 29th minute, but the Atleti goalkeeper did well to keep the ball out in the bottom corner.
Getafe were growing in confidence, and ten minutes later Stefan Scepovic almost levelled matters but his effort went agonizingly wide, the half ending 1-0 to Atletico Madrid.
The second period started with Atletico dominating once again, but it was Getafe who almost scored in the 61st minute when Pedro Leon had a solid strike go wide of the mark. Three minutes later, the home side responded with a Angel Correa strike, but it was also not good enough to rattle the net.
Atleti upped the tempo as the match neared the final whistle, and were finally rewarded in the 89th minute when Griezmann grabbed a second to secure the 2-0 victory.
