Spanish La Liga
Result: Atletico Madrid 2-0 Getafe
Date: 06 January 2018
Venue: Wanda Metropolitano
Diego Costa scored and was sent off in Atletico Madrid's 2-0 win over Getafe at the Wanda Metropolitano on Saturday afternoon.
Stefan Savic nearly opened the scoring in the first minute of the match after meeting Gabi's cross with a gliding header but goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez had it covered.
Antoine Griezmann had a chance in the 11th minute to sent the home side ahead after finding space on the edge of the box but his curling shot missed wide.
Griezmann was the provider of the opening goal after beating off a few challengers to setup Angel Correa who found the bottom corner with a right-footed low shot, 1-0.
Angel Rodriguez was ambitious to have a strike outside the box in the 34th minute but Atletico shot-stopper Jan Oblak was on hand to deny Getafe the equaliser with a great save.
The pace of the match slowed down after 40 minutes as Diego Simeone's troops were retreating into their own half, allowing the visitors to loop balls into the area.
The last five minutes was a dirty affair as four players were booked inside two minutes and Atletico took the 1-0 lead into the halftime break.
Atletico started the second half with increased intensity, putting the visitors under tremendous pressure.
On the hour mark, Gabi had a free-kick that from the edge of the box, but his effort sailed just over the crossbar.
Costa should have extended Atletico's lead in the 65th minute after latching onto a long ball with a half-volley inside the box but it sailed over the bar.
Three minutes later, Costa doubled the hosts' lead with a close range finish following a low cross from Sime Vrsaljiko, 2-0.
However, Costa's goal celebration ended in agony as he received his second yellow card for throwing himself into the crowd and Atletico had to play the remaining 20 minutes with a man down.
Getafe threatened to pull a goal back with 10 minutes left to play on the clock but Simeone's charges were organised at the back despite playing with 10 men.
Nevertheless, 2-0 was how the score remained as Atletico resumed league action with three points.
