Atletico Madrid have cemented third spot for another week, after they registered a 1-0 win over Eibar at the Vicente Calderon on Saturday evening.
Los Armeros started the better of the two teams, knocking the ball around with intensity although they failed to carve out chances.
In the 11th minute Sergi Enrich had an opportunity to grab the lead for the visitors but his angled shot from just outside the box went a little bit high on the far post.
Takashi Inui made a great run into Atletico's penalty box after beating two markers but his shot was brilliantly saved by Jan Oblak after 33 minutes.
Diego Simeone's side started to get into the match after 30 minutes as Antoine Griezmann went close to snatching the lead but his left-footed shot missed narrowly wide following a good counter-attack.
Atletico were playing with their backs against the wall and were denied opportunities to hit on the counter-attack.
The match went into the interval goalless as the two teams were cancelling each other out.
Yannick Carrasco had the opportunity to break the deadlock in the 57th minute but his long-range shot missed inches over the crossbar.
In the 69th minute Saul Niguez finally broke the deadlock for Atletico making it 1-0.
Diego Godin made a wonderful run down the right wing and picked out Niguez, who fired into the bottom left corner with a great strike.
Eibar pushed for an equaliser as the half went on, while Simeone introduced Tiago for Carrasco after 78 minutes as they look to see out the rest of the game.
Atletico were looking comfortable in the closing stages but they ended match with 10 men after Godin was sent off for a second bookable offence.
