Result: Atletico Madrid 2-1 Valencia
Date: 25 October 2015
Venue: Vicente Calderon
Goals from Jackson Martinez and Yannick Ferreira Carrasco handed Atletico Madrid a 2-1 win over Valencia at the Vicente Calderon on Sunday evening.
Diego Simeone's men nearly opened the scoring after just six minutes but Koke failed to beat Valencia goalkeeper, Jaume Domenech, who was well positioned.
Jan Oblak was called upon in the 21st minute, as the Atletico shot-stopper denied João Cancelo with an un-orthodox save, after some good build-up play.
Atletico eventually broke the deadlock in the 31st minute, as Jackson Martinez pounced on an error form Shkodran Mustafi, before calmly slotting into the far corner.
Martinez could have doubled the lead three minutes later, as the Colombian shrugged off Dos Santos but he failed to beat Domnnech from 12-yards out.
Domenech came to Valencia's rescue from the resulting corner, as the shot-stopper pulled off a superb save to keep out Diego Godin's glancing header.
However, Atletico doubled their advantage five minutes before the halftime break, as Yannick Ferreira Carrasco skipped past one challenge, before firing a low effort into the far corner from 20-yards out.
After a quiet opening to the second half, the hosts nearly added a third in the 67th minute but Antoine Griezmann's poked effort sailed just wide of the mark.
Valencia were awarded a penalty after 70 minutes when Godin brought Mustafi in the box and Paco Alcácer stepped up to slot home for his second goal of the season.
Fernando Torres squandered a chance to seal the win after 80 minutes when he headed wide of the upright from close range, after Domnnech initially denied Godin.
Nonetheless, Simeone's men saw off a late surge from Valencia to secure the three points.
David Moyes' Real Sociedad returned to wining ways, after they thumped Levante 4-0 on Sunday afternoon.
While, Las Palmas and Villarreal earned a share of the spoils, after playing out to a 0-0 draw on Sunday evening.
