Spanish La Liga
Result: Athletic Club 0-1 Atletico Madrid
Date: 20 April 2016
Venue: San Mamés
Fernando Torres was the hero for Atletico Madrid as his first-half effort sealed a slender 1-0 victory over Athletic Club in a Spanish La Liga clash on Wednesday evening.
The hosts were the brighter starters as Muniain had the game’s first real chance at goal in the ninth minute. Benat was the next one to trouble the visitors’ goals with a 23rd minute effort that sailed just wide of the mark.
The visitors began to settle and started to look threatening on attack, but it was Raul Garcia who forced a good save out of the Atletico goalkeeper, sending him to the bottom corner with a lovely headed effort in 31st minute.
Six minutes later Fernando Torres converted a header of his own to make it 1-0 to Diego Simeone’s men and continue his fine scoring run of late.
Thomas Partey almost extended their lead only three minutes later, but te woodwork was there to stop the effort from going in, much to the relief of the home support.
The second stanza started with home side dominance as well, but the visiting outfit began to gain momentum of their own as the match progressed.
The hosts were proving to be quite wasteful on attack as they created quite a few opportunities, failing to convert.
Bilbao continued to pile on the pressure, but a goal was not coming and the referee finally called a close to the clash, with Atletico leading 1-0.
The victory sees Los Rojiblancos remain in second spot level on points with FC Barcelona, who boast a better head-to-head.
