Real Madrid Extend Their Lead Over Barca

Spanish La Liga

Full Time:  Real Madrid 2-1 Sevilla

Date: 04 February 2015

Venue: Estadio Santiago Bernabéu

Goals from James Rodriguez and Jese Rodriguez handed Real Madrid a 2-1 win over Sevilla in a Spanish La Liga match at the Estadio Santiago Bernabéu on Wednesday night.

The win takes Real Madrid four points clear at the top of the table with 54 points while Barcelona sit in second on 50 points.

The loss for Sevilla leaves them in fourth place on the table with 42 points, five behind third placed Atletico Madrid and one ahead of fifth placed Valencia.

The first 45 was marred by injuries by both teams, but despite two set-backs the home side took a two goal advantage into the break.

The game started on a sour note for Real Madrid when Sergio Ramos had to leave the field injured in the eighth minute and was replaced by Nacho Fernandez.

The change didn’t seem to hinder the home side who took the lead four minutes later when James Rodriguez headed his side in front after latching onto a Marcelo cross, 1-0.

Sevilla were unlucky not to draw level in the 17th minute when Vitolo played Iborra through on goal and he proceeded to round the keeper, but saw his shot from an acute angle comeback off the post.

Ten minutes later Real Madrid suffered another set-back when the goal scorer, James Rodriguez, left the field injured and was replaced by Jese Rodriguez.

Sevilla were not immune to the bizarre injury tragedy when Beto also had to leave the field injured in the 37th minute and was replaced by Sergio Rico.

Sevilla’s problems were compounded a minute alter when substitute Jese Rodriguez doubled Real Madrid’s lead when he turned home a Karim Benzema pass at the back post, 2-0.

The second half saw Real Madrid start the better of the two sides and they came close to finding their third goal five minutes after the break when Jese Rodriguez struck the outside of the post with a shot from an acute angle 14-yards out.

Sevilla should have pulled a goal back in the 59th minute when Iborra found himself in space ten-yards out, but fluffed his shot wide with an empty net at his mercy.

Sevilla tried to find their way back into the game and managed a consolation goal in the 82nd minute courtesy of an Iago Aspas strike, 2-1.
