Goals from Nolito and Fabian Orellana earned Celta Vigo a surprise 2-0 victory over Atletico Madrid in a Spanish La Liga match at the Estadio de Balaídos on Sunday night.
It was a slow start to the game with neither side really taking the ascendancy, but as the half progressed Celta Vigo got the better of the play.
The first decent shot on goal came in the 16th minute, but Celta Vigo’s Michael Krohn-Dehli fired it inches wide from 24-yards out.
Atletico Madrid had their first real effort on goal five minutes later, but Antoine Griezmann saw his low 20-yard thunderbolt well-saved by the keeper.
In the 33rd minute Nolito dribbled his way to the edge of the box before unleashing a powerful shot, but the Celta Vigo man saw his effort skim the wrong side of the post.
Neither side could find the back of the net before the half time break.
Celta Vigo started the second half the better of the two sides and were rewarded for their efforts with a penalty-kick in the 57th minute after Nolito was brought down inside the box by Mario Suarez.
Nolito stepped up and made no mistake from the spot, 1-0.
Atletico almost equalised in the 60th minute, but Saul saw his stinging 20-yard shot superbly saved by the keeper.
In the 72nd minute Cleta Vigo managed to double their lead when Fabian Orellana drove into the box from the right side and smashed the ball across the face of goal and into the bottom left-hand corner of the net, 2-0
Atletico tried to find their way back into the game and came close in the 85th minute when an effort from Cani struck the woodwork before bouncing away from danger.
In the end Celta Vigo held on for the win that sees them up to ninth on the table with 28 points while Atletico sit in third place on 50 points.
In another late La Liga match on Sunday, second half goals from Bueno and Gael Kakuta handed Rayo Vallecano a 2-0 win over Villarreal at the Estadio del Rayo Vallecano.
The win sees Rayo Vallecano up to 11th with 26 points while Villarreal sit in sixth place on 41 points, four adrift of fifth placed Sevilla.
