Spanish La Liga
Full Time: Athletic Bilbao 1-2 Real Madrid
Date: 23 September 2015
Venue: Estadio San Mames
A brace from Karim Benzema saw Real Madrid register their fourth win of the Spanish La Liga season after beating Athletic Bilbao 2-1 at the Estadio San Mames.
It was a slow start to the game with neither side creating many scoring opportunities due to some poor decision making in the final third.
The opening goal came in the 19th minute when an error in defence by Bilbao gifted Benzema the ball a couple of yards out from goal and he made no mistake to give Madrid the lead, 1-0.
The home side almost hit back ten minutes after going behind when Aritz Aduriz met an inches perfect cross from the right, but headed just wide from ten-yards out.
In the 41st minute Aduriz was in the thick of the action again after latching onto another cross, but this time he saw his header superbly saved by Keylor Navas.
Bilbao continued to push forward in the second half and made their pressure tell in the 67th minute when Sabin headed home a cross from Markel Susaeta, 1-1.
Their joy, though, was short-lived when Madrid re-took the lead three minutes later when Benzema turned home a perfect pass from Isco.
The home side tried to find their way back into the match for the second time and came close to a second equaliser two minutes from time when Gomez Perez Ibai met a cross with a strong header, but saw his effort magnificently saved by the Madrid keeper.
The game ended 2-1 to hand Bilbao their fourth loss of the season while Madrid continue to top the La Liga standings.
