Spanish giants FC Barcelona and Real Madrid are reportedly on the verge of starting a bidding war for a French defender currently playing in La Liga.
According to Spanish publication Mundo Deportivo, both sides are eyeing Athletic Bilbao centre back Aymeric Laporte.
Both Los Blancos and the Blaugrana are apparently keen on bolstering their backline with young yet experienced defenders for next season.
The Catalan club may have a slight advantage in this two-team race as the 23-year-old defender has played under Ernesto Valverde, who managed Bilbao before his move to the Camp Nou, before.
Laporte and his former manager worked alongside each other for four years, and won the Spanish Super Cup together back in 2015.
However, Real may have their own trump card, with the defender's fellow countryman Raphael Varane in their corner.
Many have tipped the two players to be France's primary centre-back pairing in the future, and the possibility of playing together at club level could be a huge drawcard.
Laporte has a €65 million (R1 billion) release clause in his current contract, which could prove a stumbling block for both teams.
