Spanish publication Marca looked at 12 strikers that could never live up to expectations and it’s no surprise that Samuel Eto’o made the list.
The Cameroon forward came through the club’s youth academy but wasn’t able to leave his mark in the first team, only making seven appearances.
He left Los Blancos and made his name at Mallorca before joining Real’s bitter rivals FC Barcelona, where he lifted eight trophies, including two UEFA Champions League titles.
Another famous striker who didn’t make the cut at the Santiago Bernabeu is Michael Owen. The former England forward had been Liverpool’s top striker for the previous six seasons before joining the Spanish giants.
According to Transfermarkt, Owen scored 18 goals in 50 games but he left the club after just one season in Spain.
Another prime example is Klaas-Jan Huntelaar. The Dutchman joined in January 2009 but due to a technicality he couldn’t be registered for the second-half of the Champions League that season. Despite netting eight goals in 20 games, he left the club after just six months.
