When Mourinho took over at Los Blancos, Pep Guardiola's FC Barcelona were a dominant force in La Liga, having won the treble in the Spaniard's first season.
However, Mourinho won the Copa Del Rey in his first season, and followed that up by winning La Liga season, and his assistant Aitor Karanka believes the current Manchester United played in a big role Real's recent success.
The Portuguese did not have success in the Champions League, but he did help the club break a five-year absence from the semi-finals.
"The picture in Madrid has changed a lot. Jose arrived to compete with a Barcelona team who were almost unstoppable, and we managed to compete with them," Karanka told Marca.
"We did not win any Champions Leagues, but we were close. Mourinho's winning mentality put the club back into a competitive environment."
