Messi Injured As Barca Drop Points
Result: Barcelona 1-1 Atletico
Date: 21 September 2016
Venue: Camp Nou
La Liga giants Barcelona and Atletico Madrid shared the spoils in their clash on Wednesday night, while Lionel Messi picked up an injury.
The first real opportunity fell for Atletico in the 16th minute when Antoine Griezmann spread the ball to Carrasco who cut inside before stinging Ter Stegen's hands with a shot.
Javier Mascherano was then called upon to keep the hosts level, clearing the ball off the line to prevent Kevin Gameiro from opening the scoring.
At the other end of the pitch Godin had to leap to the rescue to block a shot from Luis Suarez after Jordi Alba had teed it up for the striker to run onto.
Neymar then joined in on the action by curling a shot just wide of the post after Ivan Rakitic made the hard yards.
The deadlock was broken four minutes before the interval as the Catalans took the lead. Andres Iniesta produced the cross and Rakitic was in position to head home the opener.
Griezmann threatened to equalise as he made his way to the edge of the box, but his shot on target was kept out by Ter Stegen.
The home side were dealt a heavy blow in the 59th minute as manager Luis Enrique was forced to substitute Lionel Messi, who picked up a groin injury.
The leveller arrived nonetheless just past the hour mark. A slip from Mascherano allowed Angel Correa the chance to get his effort away, and he beat Ter Stegen with his low drive.
Neymar had a chance to restore Barca's lead when he fired at goal from 25 yards, but Oblak made a terrific save low down.
Gerard Pique came agonisingly close to handing the hosts the lead in the last few minutes, but his header at goal went inches past the post after Neymar swung in the free kick.
Elsewhere, Granada lost 2-1 to Athletic Bilbao, Real Sociedad won 4-1 against Las Palmas, and Celta de Vigo beat Gijon 2-1.
