It has been reported that FC Barcelona are set to splash some cash on a new centre back next season, so today we take a look at the 10 most expensive defenders the Spanish giants have purchased.

According to Marca, former Sevilla defender Dani Alves leads the list with a transfer fee of €35 million (R616 million).
In second place is Ukraine defender Dmytro Chygrynskiy, the former Shakhtar Donetsk player who was seen as a bit of a flop at the Camp Nou and cost the club €25 million (R441 million).
Third place is a three-way tie, with Jeremy Mathieu, Javier Mascherano and Gabriel Milito costing the club €20 million (R353 million) each.
Arsenal's former captain Thomas Vermaelen is the Spanish giant's sixth most expensive defender ever. Barca paid €19 million (R335 million) for his services, but he has been riddled with injuries since his arrival in 2014.
In seventh place is Aleix Vidal and retired Frenchman Philippe Christanval. The pair are seen as two bargain buys and only cost the Catalan club about €17 million (R300 million) each.

In ninth spot is Martín Caceres, who cost €16.5 million (R291 million), followed by former Barcelona captain Eric Abidal, who cost the club €15 million (R264 million).
