Barca Boss On Dembele's Injury Nightmare
FC Barcelona Boss On Ousmane Dembele's Injury Nightmare
FC Barcelona manager Ernesto Valverde has discussed Ousmane Dembele's injury nightmare after the player was accused of hiding his discomfort from the club's staff.
Dembele played just 29 minutes of Barca's La Liga clash against Getafe this past weekend, before he was substituted due to a hamstring injury.
Some Spanish publications have claimed the 20-year-old tried to keep his injury a secret, but Valverde has sympathised with the Frenchman as he seemingly believes the player might not have known the extent of his injury.
"I don't think there is a way around this," he told Marca.
"It's clear that he is a player who has never had a muscular problem and doesn't have the experience to recognise the small disturbances.
"An experienced player may have not made the move that Dembele made."
Valverde also insisted that Dembele needs to remain patient as he faces up to four months on the sidelines.
"The hardest thing for a player when he gets hurt is that he has to be patient, to work alone and check the progress little by little," the Spanish tactician added.
"He is a young player and this is a difficulty he will find throughout his career. You never want to get there but we have all had muscular problems and knee injuries."
The winger signed for Barca from Borussia Dortmund for a fee of about €105 million (R1.65 billion) during the latest transfer window.
Dembele underwent surgery on Tuesday, and according to a statement from Barca's official website, he will be out for three and a half months.
