Torres Fires Atletico Into Copa Last 16
Copa del Rey
Result: Atlético Madrid 3-0 Elche (Atletico won 4-1 on aggregate)
Date: 29 November 2017
Venue: Wanda Metropolitano
Atlético Madrid sealed their place in the Copa del Rey last 16 with a 3-0 win over Elche at the Wanda Metropolitano, with Fernando Torres scoring a brace.
The teams headed into the second leg level at 1-1 on aggregate after Lolo Pla had cancelled out Thomas Partey’s strike and handed Elche a shock draw in the first.
Atlético looked dangerous in the opening few minutes, but were unable to snatch an early lead.
In the 25th minute, they went agonisingly close as Koke’s shot struck the post. A mere five munutes later, Guille Vallejo made a fine save to deny Luciano Vietto.
However, Atlético’s pressure paid off in the 31st minute, when José Giménez headed home from a corner to break the deadlock.
Two minutes afterwards, the hosts doubled their lead. Fernando Torres slotted home the rebound from Yannick Carrasco’s shot.
That was Torres’ first goal at the Wanda Metropolitano and he came close to scoring his second on the stroke of half-time. However, Vallejo did well to keep his header out.
The former Chelsea and Liverpool striker finally netted again in the 68th minute with a stunning strike after capitalising on Šime Vrsaljko’s cross.
Vallejo denied him a hat-trick in the 78th minute with a good save from his close-range effort before saving Vietto’s shot a minute later.
Nevertheless, Atlético marched on to the next round with a performance that will have laid to rest their unsavoury memories from the first leg.
