Atletico raced into an early lead, as Antoine Griezmann played in Fernando Torres, who placed his effort into the top corner from close range.

It took a while for Real to get going but they leveled matters in the 20th minute courtesy of Sergio Ramos header, with Toni Kroos grabbing the assist.

Miranda came to Atletico's rescue in the 30th minute, the defender pulled off a fine last ditch block to deny Ronaldo a certain goal.

However, Atletico restored their lead shortly after halftime break, as Torres got his second of the game with another neat finish from six-yards out.

Ronaldo brought the home side level in the 54th minute after turning home a cross from Gareth Bale.

Madrid needed three goals in the final 36 minutes minutes of the second half to progress into the next round but they could not add to their two goals.

While, Diego Simeone's side held on for the draw and moved onto the last eight winning the two-legged affair 4-2 on aggregate.
