Can you imagine Lionel Messi and Ronaldo in the same team? Well, it could have happened had the Portuguese not rejected an approach from the Blaugrana, as revealed by former Real Madrid president Ramon Calderon.
He claimed that Sir Alex Ferguson had offers from Barcelona and Inter Milan, and didn't want to sell the forward to Los Blancos, but the player only had Real on his mind...
Ronaldo's teammate Karim Benzema is another Santiago Bernabeu star who snubbed the chance to join Messi and co.
"There were quite a few clubs that contacted me, like Manchester (United), Inter Milan and Barcelona, but I decided to come here (Real Madrid)," he said upon his arrival in Madrid in July 2009.
Before Luis Suarez joined the Catalan club from Liverpool in 2014, Sergio Aguero was reportedly the club's main target. However, Messi's countryman and good friend was not allowed to leave Manchester – maybe if he had pushed a little harder for the move?
Former Liverpool attacker Harry Kewell also once revealed he had rejected a move to the Camp Nou.
"While he was at Barcelona, (manager Frank) Rijkaard asked me to transfer there. It would have been a great event to play for Barcelona and to be part of that team. But I preferred Liverpool."
Antoine Griezmann is a player who has been writing the headlines at Atletico Madrid this season, but he could have been at Barcelona had they wanted him for their first team and not the B side in 2009.
"When Barcelona got in touch with me, they spoke with my agents, but nothing happened. I was already playing la Segunda with La Real. I didn't want to go to another team (Barca B) in the same division."
Legendary Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand also had the chance to join the Spanish giants, but decided to stay in England as he was winning titles with the Red Devils.
When David Luiz left Chelsea for Paris Saint-Germain, many laughed at the massive €50 million transfer fee paid for him. However, the French side had to beat the Blaugrana to his signature.
"It's true that Barcelona were in touch a few times and things were looking good. But, in the end, I realised that PSG were the club that wanted me more and they eventually signed me," Luis later revealed.
Former Italy striker Alessandro Del Piero is another name on the long list, as his former agent Claudio Pasqualin revealed in 2012. "Del Piero is Juventus. During the prime of his career, he rejected Manchester United and Barcelona. He did that for love. His future has to be Juventus."
Juve goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon is another Italian who opted against joining the Catalan side in 2001, long before they became the force they are today.
"I do ask myself what my career would have been like now and again. But Barcelona only started winning in 2006. Five years without winning anything is a long time. Seeing how my career has developed, I have no regrets," he explained.
Last but not least, former AC Milan pass master Andrea Pirlo has also revealed he could have joined the Camp Nou club around the same time Zlatan Ibrahimovic did, but he opted to stay in Italy.
