Zinedine Zidane has laid his cards on the table regarding the battle of the number 7s in the run-up to this year’s Ballon d’Or award.
The French icon says he would plump for his compatriot Franck Ribery, just ahead of his charge at Real Madrid, Cristiano Ronaldo.
Zidane says that Ribery just shades it as his favourite for the award, because of the brilliant season he had last time out, in helping Bayern Munich win three major trophies.
Ribery has already been voted as the Uefa Player of the Year, and Zidane believes he should win the Ballon d’Or too.
However, it cannot be denied that CR7 is enjoying yet another sensational calendar year.
Head and shoulders the best player in a Real Madrid squad packed with superstars, Ronaldo has 55 goals to his name so far this season, and so Zidane thinks the Portuguese scoring automaton is likely to run Ribery close.
“They both deserve it,” Zidane told RMC when asked which number 7 should win football’s most prestigious individual prize.
“But I would give it to Franck because he was fundamental in the three trophies that Bayern won last season.
“The problem is there is a kid who has scored 55 goals in a season. Anyway, I do not decide.”
With fourt-time Ballon d’Or winner Lionel Messi and his club-mate Neymar also thought to be in the running, this year’s award is hotly contested, and it will be interesting to see how the cards fall at the ceremony in Zurich on January 14.
