Robin van Persie and Luis Suarez may be gunning for the English Premier League Player of the Year award, but Gareth Bale may just pip them to the prize.
And the Tottenham Hotspur attacking midfielder has actually been the most impressive player of all this season, according to former Real Madrid and France legend, Zinedine Zidane.
Zizou has been highly impressed by Welsh international Bale this season, and believes the 23-year-old is hot on the heels of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, when it comes to the best players on the planet.
"This year the player who's impressed me most is not actually playing in the Champions League. He's playing in the other cup [Europa League], and that's Bale," Zidane said, according to Soccernet.
"He's unique. He makes things look easy, his pace is frightening, his acceleration is unbelievable because of his ability to go through the gears in very little space. Plus, he's very good technically which is also important. We mustn't forget that he plays football very well!
"And he's really impressed me. I've seen him two or three times live, including recently at Lyon, which wasn't necessarily his best game, but where every time he got the ball he can surprise you."
Bale is likely to be one of European football’s hottest commodities at the end of the season, with a host of top clubs thought keen to lure him away from White Hart Lane.
And Zidane is not surprised, as he considers Bale to be close to the very top echelon of current players.
"He's perhaps not quite at the level of the other two [Messi and Ronaldo], but he's different," Zidane said of Bale.
"So personally I don't think he's far off."
