Burak Yilmaz confirmed himself as one of the stars of this season’s Champions League last night, by scoring a beautiful goal for Galatasaray against Schalke.
The Turkish international has been somewhat of a journeyman gun for hire in his homeland, turning out for every top club in the Turkish league.
But this has been a watershed season for him, and he is tied with superstar Cristiano Ronaldo as the current top scorer in the Champions League.
His seventh strike of the campaign was simply sumptuous, and revealed a player flush with confidence and technical ability, who is at the top of his game.
To put Gala in the lead in their 1-1 draw against Schalke, Yilmaz received a pass from Selcuk Inan on the edge of the box, and with a classy touch with the outside of his boot, flicked the ball past a defender before slamming it home.
Although Gala later conceded, and Didier Drogba’s less than spectacular full debut overshadowed his display, Yilmaz was the star of the show.
While the 27-year-old may not be a household name across Europe, his ability comes as no surprise to those in the know.
"I'm pleased for Burak Yilmaz, with every day he is trying to improve and overcome his weaknesses and I'm pleased with that," Gala manager Fatih Terim told reporters after the match.
Turkish football journalist Ilhan Soyler added in Hurriyet: "There was only one player on the pitch using their imagination and challenging the opposition and that was Burak."
