It was a tough night for South African players abroad as Siyanda Xulu suffered defeat while Sive Phekezela missed out completely.
Xulu, in Russia playing for FK Rostov-Na-Donu, maintained his place as a regular starter for the club away to FK Amkar Perm.
The South African, though, was booked in the 34th minute of a game that saw the referee produce eight yellow cards. An own goal from Vitalily Dyakov ended up being decisive though as Xulu's team went down 1-0.
Sive Phekezela missed out completely in Sweden as his side, Gefle, went down 3-1 away to IFK Goteborg on Thursday night.
The results follow a mixed night for South Africans in Holland on Wednesday, with Thulani Serero suffering a knock in Ajax Amsterdam’s 4-2 win in the Dutch Cup while Kamohelo Mokotjo helped PEC Zwolle to a 2-0 win.
