You can almost hear the hearts of Liverpool fans breaking with the news that Xabi Alonso could be on the way to Chelsea.
Speculation is mounting that Jose Mourinho will bring Spanish international midfielder Alonso with him to Stamford Bridge, if as expected he returns there from Real Madrid.
It is often thought that fellow Portuguese men Mourinho and Cristiano Ronaldo are thick as thieves at the Bernabeu, but interestingly, amid all the politicking and back stabbing, Alonso has emerged as The Special One's closest ally amongst Madrid's players.
The deep thinking and likeable 31-year-old playmaker has turned down the offer of a contract extension from Los Blancos, and when he did, Liverpool fans salivated on the off chance that he could return to Anfield, where he remains a cult hero.
Alonso will likely end his stellar career at his first love, Real Sociedad, but he is not yet ready to exit centre stage.
A football Anglophile and intellectual, he likes the idea of another spell in the English Premier League, and Chelsea could be lucky enough to get him.
The Blues are known to be seeking a deep-lying pass master, and because he can leave Real on the cheap, Alonso certainly fits the bill.
Despite the fact that he is older than the players Liverpool’s owners like to buy, Reds fans still harbour the flame that Alonso will return.
And Arsenal- who tried to sign him in 2009- are also believed to be keeping tabs on Alonso’s movements. He would surely love the chance to play with his oldest friend in football, Mikel Arteta.
But the Mourinho connection, and Chelsea’s ability to blow their competitors out of the water financially, seems to suggest that if Alonso’s silky skills are to be seen in England again, they will be clothed in blue.
